Human Cargo. Arbitrary readmissions from the Italian sea ports to Greece
July 2013
Every year, thouÂsands of refuÂgees and migrants hide in pasÂsenÂger ships, traÂveÂling in high-speed inflataÂble boats or in any other mariÂtiÂme transÂport, in an attempt, to cross the AdriaÂtic Sea. TheÂse crossÂborÂder moveÂments on this interÂnal EU-borÂder, in most of the cases, conÂcern peoÂpÂle in need of interÂnaÂtioÂnal protection.
TheÂse peoÂpÂle are tryÂing to escape from Greece, their first EuroÂpean counÂtry of entÂry, which has been conÂdemÂned by the EuroÂpean Court of Human rights (ECHtR) in the case of MSS v BelÂgiÂum and Greece as not being safe for peoÂpÂle in need of interÂnaÂtioÂnal protection.
ApparÂentÂly, the reseÂarch finÂdings cleÂarÂly indiÂcaÂte that in the majoÂriÂty, peoÂpÂle in need of interÂnaÂtioÂnal proÂtecÂtion and unacÂcomÂpaÂnied minors who are detecÂted and appreÂhenÂded in the ItaÂliÂan ports and in the souÂthern coasts of ItaÂly, are eitÂher refuÂsed entÂry to the ItaÂliÂan terÂriÂtoÂry or are readÂmitÂted back to Greece, witÂhout being granÂted any access to interÂnaÂtioÂnal proÂtecÂtion, to any sort of regisÂtraÂtiÂon of their claÂim, idenÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtiÂon and indiÂviÂduÂal evaÂluaÂtiÂon of their case and/or vulnerability.
