PRO ASYL and RSA demand the immediate release of Italian journalist Gabriele Del Grande

Del GranÂde was arresÂted in TurÂkeyÂ’s souÂthern borÂder with Syria and soon after he was transÂfer to a detentiÂon faciÂliÂty at the city of MugÂla. He had traÂveÂled to the regiÂon in order to purÂsue his invesÂtiÂgaÂtiÂon on the oriÂgÂins of the IslaÂmic StaÂte. InitiÂal inforÂmaÂtiÂon sugÂgested he was appreÂhenÂded due to his papers not being in order. EuroÂpean and ItaÂliÂan autÂhoÂriÂties have initiÂalÂly choÂsen a quiet approach not reveÂalÂing that TurÂkiÂsh autÂhoÂriÂties were uncoÂopeÂraÂtiÂve, even by restÂricÂting access of ItaÂly’s diploÂmaÂtic envoy to the detaiÂnee. Their choice to handÂle Del GranÂde’s detentiÂon quietÂly and away from public attenÂtiÂon has not proÂduÂced posiÂtiÂve results.
Nine days after his arrest and after conÂtiÂnues proÂtest Del GranÂde was perÂmitÂted a phoÂne call to ItaÂly. He then reveÂaÂled that he was being detaiÂned incomÂmuÂniÂcaÂdo until that very moment and not perÂmitÂted to use his teleÂphoÂne altÂhough no charÂges were presÂsed against him. He was also denied access to a lawyÂer. He insists that his papers were in order and the reason for the arrest is linÂked to the conÂtent of his work, for which he has been quesÂtioÂned mulÂtiÂple times during his detentiÂon. SinÂce TuesÂday Del GranÂde has gone on hunÂger strike demanÂding his rights be respected.
GabrieÂle Del GranÂde’s case is of major importance not only due to his perÂsoÂnal record of high quaÂliÂty indeÂpenÂdent jourÂnaÂlism and uncomÂproÂmiÂsing human right actiÂvism. But also becauÂse he as a perÂson has demanÂded his rights against an autÂhoÂriÂtaÂriÂan staÂte, conÂtraÂry to the wider examÂpÂle of EU’s subÂmisÂsiÂve and cyniÂcal approach that toleÂraÂtes masÂsiÂve vioÂlaÂtiÂon of freeÂdom of expresÂsiÂon and civil rights in TurÂkey in exchÂanÂge for petÂty poliÂtiÂcal gains.
Del GranÂde deserÂves our respect and soliÂdaÂriÂty for his struggÂle to win back his freeÂdom. We call for the immeÂdiaÂte release of GabrieÂle Del GranÂde and all jourÂnaÂlists unjusÂtÂly detaiÂned in Turkey.
