PRO ASYL sheds light on the situation of deported minorities in Kosovo

Copyright: Florian Bachmeier

Deported Roma and other Kosovan minorities have little opportunity to establish a decent existence. They struggle to meet their basic subsistence needs, and their rights to bodily integrity, access to health care and education have been thrown by the wayside. Adding to their burdens, they are in fear of their safety after this summer's violent attacks.

In a recent report, PRO ASYL detailed the lives of Roma deported from Germany, as well as Ashkali and Egyptian minority members, and urged the new government to stop the deportations.

Greece violates EU asylum right

Complaint submitted to the European Commission

On November 11, 2009, PRO ASYL, along with fellow refugee organizations Dutch Council for Refugees, Finnish Refugee Advice Center, and British Refugee and Migrant Justice, filed a complaint with the European Commission against Greece. Twenty other European refugee organizations support the complaint.

PRO ASYL demands that the European Commission immediately initiates an infringement procedure in the European Court of Justice based on Greece's failure to abide by fundamental European asylum policy. Greece provides for asylum protection within its laws, however it falls short of its legal obligations in practice.

PRO ASYL

In the mid-80`s, significant restrictions were introduced into German asylum law. Due to these changes, people persecuted for political, ethnic or religious grounds encountered great difficulties in securing lasting and reliable protection. For this reason, the National Working Group PRO ASYL formed in 1986, out of which the Friends of PRO ASYL emerged. The National Working Group, comprised of refugee councils, churches, unions as well as welfare and human rights organizations, have come together to protect refugees rights and to give voice to their concerns.
